Business: It’s Made of People!

Tim Leberecht explores a humanist vision of business: here. This is a recommended and useful read. The bias is one of human goodness, original blessing and belief in our capacity to bring out the best in others. The essential argument here is that structures are to be used, people are to be loved and mixing the two up really makes a mess. Now, if only we could help our executive/management classes to integrate ambition and compassion.

With every new technology there comes a moment when we stop using it to replicate the older ways and embrace its full abilities. We no longer ask the printed word to replicate calligraphic printing, the letterpress to hide its impressions, the computer to operate as a word processor and the LED to merely replace incandescents. Perhaps it is time to move beyond bookishness with our personal digital devices. UI designer Tom Hobbs argues that reliance on old forms are now hobbling designers.
